HISTORY

Mekliganj College, founded on 22nd December, 1996 as a General Degree College in the district of Cooch Behar, West Bengal, is located at the remotest part of the district adjacent to Bengladesh border. After partition, Mekhliganj, once strategically important town, was converted into a backward town from both socio-economic as well as academic perspectives. To overcome this backwardness, the people of Mekhliganj Subdivision, through relentless truffle of almost one decade, were able to establish the college so that local people can get an opportunity to improve their level of knowledge and awareness. From its modest beginning in 1996, the college within a very short period has developed its own distinctive identity by introducing some new disciplines as well as increasing the number of its faculty members. Thus the college has grown up both academically and physically within a short time because of the relentless efforts from both the teaching and Non-Teaching staff members. Initially, the college was affiliated to the University of North Bengal. However, from the year 2016 onwards, after the establishment of Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, the college has come under this new university, and that has paved the way for further development of the college in the near future. Presently, the college offers B.A. Honours courses in eight subjects and B.A. Programme courses in ten subjects. A total of nearly 2600 students are admitted in this college to study courses and subjects of their choice.
