Initiation and a brief overview
Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organisation, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts. The Department of Sociology at Mekliganj College was started in 2014 with two guest lecturers, namely Mr. Jagadish Ch. Barman and Ms. Sonali Das and they had resigned in 2020 for some personal reasons. Mr. Ashish Tarafdar was appointed as a guest lecturer in 2017 and in 2020 west Bengal government was approved him as a state-aided college teacher. Presently he is working as a SACT- I and till now he is continuing. He trains students to grasp the social structures, understands the social processes, maps the dynamics of social change, and makes sense of individual and collective experiences in their proper social context.
Under the BA (Programme) Sociology, students are expected to finish four Core Courses (CC), two Discipline Specific Electives (DSE), four Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), and two Generic Elective courses (GE) over a period of six semesters. The Department is offers four Core Courses that introduce the students to Introduction to Sociology -1, Rural Sociology, Introduction to Sociology-2, and Social Problems in India. students get to do four Skill Enhancement Courses on Research Design and Sampling techniques, Women & Culture in Indian Society, Gender Sensitisation, and Women and Society.
Course Offered
The Department also offers Sociology of Indian Society as Generic Elective -1 and Sociology of Indian Society as Generic Elective-2 for program courses.
Generic Elective for Honours students (Core course) of other disciplines introduce to Introduction to Sociology- I for 1st semester and Introduction to Sociology-ll for 2nd semester.
