Brief description of the department
Since the inception of the college in 1996, English has been as B.A. English (General) Course, and the journey of Honours Courses in the Department of English has finally started since 2013. The undergraduate programme in English under CBCS system based on Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University has been designed to provide students with a strong foundation in English Literature. Covering a wide range of texts, authors, literary movements, literary trends, theories and criticism, the course equips students for further study and research in the subject. It is also intended to make the study of literature interesting, enjoyable and challenging. Students are encouraged to participate in the teaching-learning process to develop their skills for original, independent and analytical thinking and appreciation. Teaching strategies include the lecture method, student seminars, class tests and class discussions. The academic performance of the students of the department has been consistently good for the last few years. At present, the English Department has a five-member faculty (Two Assistant Professors, Three State aided college teachers). Ms. Pemu Sherpa served the department from 27.09.2017 to 27.09.2019 and Soumya Sarkar was associated with the department from 10.03.2015 to 24.05.2017.
Mission
The key mission of the Department of English is to be engaged in reading, writing, teaching, research, and public service that inspire and improve understanding in the field English through Literature, Writing, and Rhetoric. The Department inspires and advances learners by developing a deepening realization of language and literacy, by inspiring the values of critically joyful reading and efficient writing, and by providing the richness of literature of all ages.
Studies in English Literature not only prepare students for employment but also move them to embrace ideas and different cultural traditions which help them acquaint with others in multicultural matrix. Along with the traditional areas of English study, the Department of English promotes the studies relating to the issues of cultural diversity, gender-construction, and identity formation and so on. Along with traditional courses, the Honours Core Courses accommodate Indian Classical Writings, American Literature, Women’s Writing, Partition Literature, Popular Literature, and Literary Theories and Criticism while Program Courses incorporate experiential learning. The Program Courses also greatly contribute.
Vision
The Department seeks to foster love and knowledge of literature and of language in the learners. A variety of literary, analytical, and theoretical skills is imparted to the students so that they can speak, read, and write effectively. The students are also encouraged to think deeply and to reflect on what they have learned. A love of learning and an appreciation for English language and literature is also encouraged.
