Initiation and a brief overview
The Bengali Department was introduced as a General Subject since 1996, and the journey of Honours Courses in the Department of Bengali has finally started since 2005. The undergraduate programme in Bengali under CBCS system based on CoochBehar Panchanan Barma University has been designed to provide students with a strong foundation in Bengali Language and Literature. Covering a wide range of texts, authors, literary movements, literary trends, theories and criticism, the course equips students for further study and research in the subject.It is also intended to make the study of literature interesting, enjoyable and challenging. Students are encouraged to participate in the teaching-learning process to develop their skills for original,independentandanalyticalthinkingandappreciation.Teachingstrategiesinclude the lecture method, student seminars, class tests and class discussions. The academic performanceofthestudentsofthedepartmenthasbeenconsistentlygoodforthelastfewyears. At present,the Bengali Department has four-member faculties (Two Assistant Professor and Two State aided college teachers- SACT).
Mission
The key mission of the Department of Bengali is to be engaged in reading, writing, teaching, research,andpublicservicethatinspireandimproveunderstandinginthefieldBengalithrough Literature, Writing, and Rhetoric. The Department inspires and advances learners by developing a deepening realisation of language and literacy, by inspiring the values of critically joyful reading and efficient writing, and by providing the richness of literature of all ages.
Studies in Bengali Literature not only prepare students for employment but also move them to embrace ideas and different cultural traditions which help them acquaint with others in multicultural matrix. Along with the traditional areas of Bengali study, the Department of Bengali promotes the studies relating to the issues of cultural diversity, gender-construction, and identity formation and so on. Along with traditional courses, the Honours Core Courses accommodate Indian Classical Writings, Bengali Literature, Women’s Writing, Partition Literature, Popular Literature, and Literary Theories and Criticism while Program Courses incorporate experiential learning. The Program Courses also greatly contribute.
Vision
The department has offered General as well as Honours/Major courses. The area of Bengali literature is vast. So many writers have contributed their writings in different periods. Hence, the writers of the History of Bengali literature wrote it dividing mainly three sections: The Old Period, the Medieval Period and the Modern Period. The ancient life style of Bengali where Buddhist philosophy is involved is depicted in Charyapada is included in the course where areas are there to be explored till now. The valuable texts of medieval period also like that. Literature of 19th Century has great importance in society. By exploring moral values from the texts of this time, students guide themselves and make them able to discriminate between right and wrong. Through literature a student can know lots about history, geography, economy, philosophy and so on. So, the department’s vision is to impart an all-round knowledge to the learners.
Child literature which included in the course opens up the world of fantasy which is already in young age.
Sufficient information is there in the history of Bengali literature which enhances students’ knowledge.
Bengali language, its history play an important role in learning all about it, reading and writing properly included in the course.
Bengali culture is very attractive along with Tagorean aspects. Students’ qualities develop practicing this culture through various programmes besides academic side.
